Launch of the National Hairdressing Apprenticeship in Cavan Institute 2022
Cavan and Monaghan Education and Training Board (CMETB) in partnership with Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board (LCETB) recently hosted an Employers Briefing for the National Hairdressing Apprenticeship. Many local employers in the Cavan and Monaghan region attended the event.
CMETB are currently enrolling for the National Hairdressing Apprenticeship leading to a QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Hairdressing. This 3-year programme will be delivered at Cavan Institute and apprentices will spend one day in college and four days a week on-the-job training with their employer.
Currently there is a skills shortage in hairdressing and many salons across the country are struggling to find suitably qualified hairdressers to sustain and grow their business. At the event, employers were advised how to become an Apprenticeship Employer and received details on the financial support which consists of a €2,000 grant annually for each registered apprentice.
This programme is an opportunity for apprentices to launch an exciting career in hairdressing with many varied opportunities including self-employment, film and media work and international travel.
Dr Fiona McGrath, Chief Executive, CMETB, said: “Bringing the National Hairdressing Apprenticeship to the Cavan/Monaghan region is a great boost for the area, helping to serve local employers by addressing skill shortages and offering support by way of training grants and learning mentors. The apprenticeship route is an attractive option whereby students can ‘earn as they learn’ in their own locality.”
Sinead McKenna, Training Services Manager, CMETB, said: “Many employers in attendance support our learners on a range of CMETB Programmes, and we are delighted to add the National Hairdressing Apprenticeship to our list of Apprenticeships on offer within CMETB. According to SOLAS there are 6,500 Irish employers using the apprenticeship model to recruit and develop their talent pipeline.”
